Practical aspects of Radiation protection in PET/CT facility

A.Alenezi, K.Soliman, . 2014

Radiation protection issues in PET/CT have been addressed adequately with significant progress being made in reducing occupational radiation doses in PET/CT facilities. Applied measurement techniques and variation in work practices increase the variations in published data. Other factors such as; experience level of staff, type of PET scanner (e.g.new Time Of Flight technology), work practice, administered activity, procedure used for dispensing and administering 18F-FDG patient doses (e.g. use of automated dose injection/ dispensing ), time spent by worker close to patient, distance from the patient and  workload are the causes of these variations. .
In this presentation, the recent trends of radiation protection in PET/CT facility will be discussed and presented.
Extremity dose for workers in PET/CT is an issue that needs to be considered carefully in routine daily practice and the highest radiation dose should be estimated
Radiation dose reduction techniques for PET component in PET/CT imaging will be presented. The impact of high workload in PET/CT facility on staff safety will be discussed.
Review of extremity dose in PET/CT is also analysed in the published literature.
By the end of this presentation, the participant should be able to:
Summarize The PET dose component of the PET/CT examination
Discuss the radiation safety considerations for PET
Discuss the practical techniques used to reduce the radiation dose for both patient and worker.
Discuss the effectiveness of using new trends (e.g. TOF, Automated dispensing/infusion system) in radiation safety.
