Eng 613: Semantics & Pragmatics علم الدلالة والذرائعية

This advanced course looks at language from two different but interrelated perspectives, semantics and pragmatics. The pragmatics component gives students the opportunity to practice and critique Austin’s Speech Act theory, Grice’s co-operative principle, and Martin and White’s engagement resources of appraisal framework. The semantic component will comprehensively survey the different approaches to the study of meaning in language as well as theories of meaning at an advanced level. This includes logic and truth relations and connectors, reference, propositions, and paradigmatic and syntagmatic lexical sense relations.
