Course Description:
This course aims at introducing students to the four major components of phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Students should do enough exercises to ensure good coverage of the material at hand.
 
General Goal:
Develop a solid understanding of ‘linguistics’ and the basic concepts in the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
 
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate their ability to:
 
  • Define what ‘linguistics’ is and incorporate its component parts into the student’s evolving understanding of language
  • Describe English sounds using phonological terminology
  • Transcribe simple words using IPA.
  • Explain basic phonological processes such as assimilation, elision, gemmination
  • State simple phonological processes using phonological rules
  • Understand the basics of English word formation
  • Perform morphological analysis of words
  • Differentiate between some similar concepts: morpheme/allomorph, derivational/inflectional morphemes
  • Explain basic principles of the various syntactic theories.
  • Perform  basic syntactic analysis of sentences using tree diagram and transformational rules

Classroom norms & expectations
 

  • All students are expected to attend classes regularly and turn in assignments on time
  •  There is no need to take permission to enter/leave the class
  • Attendance is taken at the beginning of the class. All are welcome to enter class after attendance is taken but are considered absent!
  • Students who do not miss a single class for the entire semester are given 5 marks additional credit and will earn a full mark allotted for participation
