233 Law

233 Law

Description:

Explores the role of international law in the relations between and within states, between states and individuals, and between states and firms. Since the end of the Cold War, we have witnessed an explosion of international law issues and problems—some new, some revived—played out in the full glare of the global media: the Gulf War, NATO’s operations in the Balkans, the 11 September attacks, the U.S.-led Global War on Terrorism, and conflicts in the Middle East. Course addresses the history and sources of international law; rights and duties of states; jurisdiction; the impact of international law on domestic law; the International Court of Justice; individuals as objects of international law; human rights; laws of war, the U.N. and the use of force; and the law of the sea. Special emphasis on the current war on terrorism and its implications for international law. Includes a four-day study tour to The International Court of Justice in The Hague, near Amsterdam, with a couse fee billed from Syracuse (trip suspended for 2007-08).
