GEO 281 (Geology for Engineers)

Course Goals and Objectives: This is an introductory course on geology for engineers introducing the students of civil engineering to the basics concepts and terminology used in geology. The course will introduce the students to the fundamentals of mineralogy, the major rock groups, the surficial deposits, groundwater and the engineering properties of rocks.
After completing Geology for Engineers the students should be able to:
1. Understand basic geological concepts and terminology.
2. Basic understanding of geological reports.
4. Identify basic rock types and the properties of these rocks that an engineer may be concerned with.
5. Understand surface geological processes and how they affect engineering studies.
There will be laboratory-based practical’s introducing identification of minerals and rocks.
