ENGT 126 Language & Culture 1

The course aims at enhancing the students' awareness of the inextricable link between language and culture generally and the relationship between culture and the target language (i.e., English) specifically.  After a brief introduction to the history of the English language, students are offered texts in the field of Language varieties such as dialects and accents of the target language, Bilingualism and Language Planning. The course, also, provides general provisions in the area of language cultures, such as social linguistics (Sociolinguistics), culture and social dialects in addition to the factors influencing its development.
After that comes the teaching of scientific material in language and culture which includes some of the theories in that field, such as the theory of Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and the impact on the culture and language which is called Language universals. Additionally, the dominant characteristics of the target language will be explored by looking at Hofstede’s conception of individualism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and masculinity.  Also, Hall’s concept of high and low context cultures will be studied. The course will then focus on the role of non-verbal communication in the target language culture by examining the following aspects: emblems, proxemics, chronemics, and paralanguage. Finally, a scholarly article about culture in translation will be discussed.
