Challenges of Collecting Data abroad: Referring to forced marriage in Saudi Arabia
Collecting data is one of the most important and difficult steps that researchers face. In this paper I am going to describe and discuss some issues and difficulties which I have went through last year while my research data were conducting in Saudi Arabia. First, I will start with the time question of timing. After that how the participants’ selection was made and issues in arranging the interviews. Then particular challenges and what was done to go beyond them. As consequences of conducting the data collection during last summer holiday especially in Ramadan, some participants were less willing and less available to be interviewed. In addition, the difficulty of interviewing women face to face owing to the law that does not allow a woman to meet a man who is not relative without having a man of her family presents. Moreover, it was clear that non-Saudi
potential participants were worried of saying something that would affect their job.
