حصل على شهادة البكالوريوس من قسم اللغة العربية/ كلية الآداب / جامعة الرياض (الملك سعود حاليا) 1385/1386 هـ حصل على شهادة الدكتوراه من جامعة سينت آندروس University of St. Andrews / سكوتلندا / المملكة المتحدة 1974م (1394هـ) التخصص العام: التاريخ التخصص الدقيق: التاريخ والحضارة الإسلامية باشر العمل بالتدريس بقسم التاريخ / جامعة الملك عبدالعزيز / فرع مكة (جامعة أم القرى حاليا) في نهاية العام الجامعي 1394هـ ، ثم انتقل إلى جامعة الرياض (جامعة الملك سعود ) في بداية العام الجامعي 1396هـ
