Optical Access Networks (Industry R&D):
Fathallah spent 6 years in high-tech R&D private Corporation, working on the design, development, and integration of innovative solutions to the next generation fiber optic access networks and systems.  He initiated and contributed many collaborative R&D projects that involve multiple parties including AccessPhotonic Networks Inc., Nortel Networks, Marconi Communications, and other Canada Government research institutions.  His contributions have related to both levels: component and system.  In fact, he has contributed to the design of novel optical sources; erbium doped fiber and semiconductor amplifiers, advanced Bragg gratings, lossless-splitters/combiners, remote amplification, novel network architectures in metropolitan and access areas, all-optical routing, network monitoring and surveillance. Many of these projects led to patent applications [Patents: P2-P8]. Some of these patents already led to products available in the market.
Passive Optical Networks (PONs)

Passive Optical Networks (PONs) is one of the top success stories in optical networking. It is well believed now that PON is the ultimate winning solution for the last/first mile bottleneck. Fibre-To-The‑X (FTTX-PON) simultaneously supports point-to-point services such as Internet and point-to-multipoint broadcast signals such as TV. In the issued European patent [P2], Fathallah introduced the first time architectural OCDM and/or wavelength division multiplexing WDM solutions that increase the number of customers by orders of magnitude.  Furthermore, power losses primarily due to splitting limit the future expansion of the PON legs, thus reducing the number of customers. In the issued US patent [P3] Fathallah developed a new concept of a lossless optical splitting technique based on remote amplification. This consists of a decentralized Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The lossless splitter was designed adaptable to unpredictable growth of subscription demand.

Because of its Point-to-Multipoint architecture of FTTX-PONs, traditional optical time domain reflectometry is not efficient to monitor and supervise them. Fathallah has been the first to introduce the concept of optical code division multiplexing to monitor FTTX networks.   This made quickly became very popular to the R&D community in the field.
 
OPTICAL CODE DIVISION MULTIPLEXING

Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) has enjoyed enormous interest in the recent years due to several advantages vis-à-vis other multiplexing strategies. OCDMA offers greater flexibility, minimal provisioning, asynchronous uncoordinated transmissions, and soft capacity when compared with wavelength division multiplexing. OCDMA is being considered for access networks, including passive optical networks, which enable huge bandwidth in the first/last mile bottleneck as well as future packet and switched optical networks. Fathallah has initiated the idea of applying Bragg gratings to ODCMA coding/decoding. Moreover, he has developed and experimented 2D timeXfrequency coding.  Few years later, Bragg grating became a key component in implementing any OCDMA coding principle. Fathallah’s publication [J2] has been cited 201 times per ISI, 327 times per Google Scholar. In fact, His pioneer work has influenced large research efforts at major universities worldwide. Significant development of new codes was inspired by his proposed two-dimensional OCDMA system (see Kwong at Hofstra U., Bajcsy at McGill U., Vasic at U. Arizona, Gagliardi at USC). Fiber Bragg grating technology has been investigated for wider varieties of OCDMA (Smith at U. Toronto, Richardson at U. Southampton, Chen at McGill U., Kitayama at Osaka U.) including the use of superstructure gratings. Our work inspired research into special optical sources more appropriate for two-dimensional OCDMA technology (Chan at C.U. of Hong Kong and Peng at Nat. Chiao-Tung Univ). This highly successful research program led to a patent [P1] that the University Laval (licensed).    
 
OPTICAL SOURCES AND TRANSMITTERS

The emergence of fiber optics in access and FTTH motivated researchers to look for lower cost optical sources than the lasers typically used for long distance communications. Incoherent waveband sources are an attractive alternative but still require study and investigation. Moreover, most OCDMA techniques need broadband sources with specific characteristics not available in the market. In [P6, P7] we developed different transmitter settings based on erbium doped fiber and/or semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) useful in both OCDMA networks and incoherent WDM.
