DESIGN OF A ROBOT SYSTEM TO ASSIST A BLIND PERSON OUTDOORS

Abstract:
This project aims to design a system for assisting a blind person cross a traffic light safely and do other simple tasks like recognize store signs. The system will be simulated using a mobile robot that can navigate in a simulated street environment. It is equipped with a wireless camera, and can transmit a live feed to a computer via WIFI. The video will be processed in the computer to recognize store signs and traffic lights.
 
The project involves the following tasks: 1) Design a traffic light detection algorithm, 2) Design a store sign recognition system, and 4) Implement and test the whole system in a simulated environment using a robot.
