Course Description:

This course aims to train students to develop their speaking and listening skills. Speaking skills include pronunciation as well as informal and academic presentations and discussions. Listening skills include understanding information from basic conversations and academic lectures. The focus of the course will be on practical language use. Every student will perform these tasks numerous times within the class. Extensive use will be made of audio and visual materials to train the students to listen to language used in different situations.

 

Course Aims and Objectives:

By the end of the course, students must be able to:

·        Understand spoken English at a variety of communicative situations, especially lectures.

·        Speak about different topics in different communicative situations.

·        Show an ability to produce spoken language that has an acceptable level of clarity.

 

Course Main Subjects:

·        Group Discussions/Debates:  Students are given a topic in class to discuss together as a class. They will be given the opportunity to voice their opinions and speak freely.

·        Individual work: Students are given a topic to prepare at home then to present in class.

·        Class work: Students are given a topic to prepare in class and present it within the same class. The purpose of this is to tell if the student has the ability to organize her thoughts within a short time with no help from a dictionary.

 

Methods of Assessment:

Group and individual projects in which students may need to lead a discussion or make short presentations. Grading will be based upon the following:

·        Class work = 10 %

.        5 mini presentations = 25% (5% for each presentation)

·        Mid-Term exam = 25%

·        Final Exam = 40 %
