CHEM 442; Organic Industries

This course deals with introduction and classification of the chemical industry and downstream industries, manufacture of textiles (acrylic fibers, nylon fibers, and polyester fibers), synthesis of plastics and rubber, adhesives (epoxy, urethane and acrylic adhesives), pigments, dyes (natural and synthetic dyes), paints, Polymer Coatings, Lacquers, and Printing Inks, soap and detergents (anionic, cationic and nonionic detergents), The Agrochemical Industry & Organic and inorganic fertilizers and pesticides, and pharmaceutical Industries.
Experiments
The experimental part includes preparation and characterization of some selected compounds including:

  1. Polymer Synthesis:
  1. Synthesis of nylon and polyesters
  2. Synthesis of poly styrene beads (suspension polymerization)
  3. Synthesis of phenol-formaldehyde resin (Bakelite resin)
  1. Paints, Dyes and Pigments
  1. Dyes and pigments: Synthesis of Orange II. Test of dyeing.
  2. Indigo synthesis and dyeing.
  3. Extraction of pigments from tomato and carrot.
  4. Making a simple paint
  1. Synthesis of soap and detergents

a)Synthesis of soap
b)Synthesis of detergent
c)Test of hardness
d)Analysis of fats & oils (Saponification value and iodine number).

  1. Analysis of pesticides residual in food.
