PURPOSE
            Dental Implants have become one of the most exciting, rewarding, and challenging aspects of contemporary dentistry.  As such, it is necessary and important that the contemporary restorative dentist be well versed in this area in order to incorporate implant treatment into his/her practice, as well as assume a leadership role in dispersing information on this topic.
            This course is designed to provide the basic information necessary to enable the participant to utilize the team approach for restoring the dentition with contemporary one or two-stage osseointegrated implant systems.  In addition, the post graduate student will become familiar with the literature as it pertains to the scientific basis for dental implant therapy and to current controversies in dental implantology.
 Phase I of this course (Semester I), PDS 593 will be in a standard lecture format. The speakers from The PCS department and other departments of the college will highlight all the contents concerning dental implants from history to the maintenance of the dental implant
Phase II of this course (Semester II), will include a series of seminar sessions where selected articles will be assigned to be discussed during the sessions, the participants are expected to read the articles ahead of time and come to the session ready to present and discuss to articles. It will also will include implant case presentation of the participant own cases, during which he or she will be able to present his/her own implant case , treatment plan, surgical procedure, implant system used and discuss that with the group and answer questions.
 
 
 
 
OUTCOMES

1. Implants as a Treatment Modality: Recognize the need to include the use of implants as a treatment modality for that segment of the population requiring restoration and maintenance of oral function, appearance and health.
2. Trends in Implant Dentistry: Discuss the current status and trends in implant dentistry.
3. Types of Implant Modalities & Options: Identify different types of implant modalities and options.
4. Anatomic Considerations and Limitations: Describe the maxillary and mandibular anatomic considerations and limitations in relation to implant placement.
5. Imaging and Diagnostic Procedures: Recognize the need for imaging and other diagnostic procedures for implant therapy.
6. Sequential Treatment Planning: Describe the sequential treatment planning for implant therapy and alternative therapies.
7. Patient Education and Preparation: Describe a protocol for patient education and preparation for dental implant therapy to include informed consent, financial considerations, and duration of care.
8. Laboratory and Clinical Prosthodontic Procedures: Describe the various laboratory and clinical prosthodontic procedures for implant supported and/or retained prostheses, including provisional prostheses when indicated.
9. Maintenance Procedures: Describe maintenance procedures following completion of implant treatment.
10. Complications with Implant Treatment: Identify complications involved with implant treatment and describe interceptive techniques for treating these problems.

OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of the Advanced Program in Implant Dentistry, program participants will have a thorough understanding and clinical competence in the diagnosis and treatment of endosseous and other types of dental implants. Participants will have the ability to successfully complete the diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment of assigned clinical cases of totally and partially edentulous patients who require specific implant procedures to fabricate implant supported prostheses.
Develop diagnostic and treatment planning skills to enhance the esthetic outcome.
• Identify soft and hard tissue surgical approaches to maintain quality soft tissues around dental implants.
• Identify significance of crestal bone maintenance for long term functional outcome.
•Update with   the latest review articles in a seminar format.
