Since the introduction of quinacrine mustard as a banding agent, it was a revolution on cytogenetics. Fluorochrome banding technique
using quinacrine produces a yellow fluorescence of differing intensity (Q-bands). Q-banding was first developed for plant
chromosomes and was later successfully extended to human chromosomes and then to other animal systems, with modifications.
Q-banding has been successful not only in establishing standard human karyotype but also in ascribing structural chromosome
rearrangements, such as duplications/deletions, peri- and paracentric inversions, and aneuploidy (chromosome monosmy or trisomy).
