Cleft lip and palate is a condition that develops during pregnancy and lead to facial disfigurement. This varies in form and severity. It may be in the form of a split or an opening in the upper lip alone, or may extend through the roof of the mouth, which is known as the palate, up to the throat. Children affected with cleft lip and palate may suffer from various problems including; feeding and speech difficulties, communication and social interaction problems, and negative impact on appearance and psychological well-being. 

Children with cleft lip and palate undergo a series of operations and have regular medical and dental consultations throughout their early years. 

 

الشفة المشقوقة والحنك هو تشوّهٌ خَلقي يتطور خلال فترة الحمل ويتسبب في حدوث تشوهات في الوجه. وقد يختلف من حيث الشكل وشدة. قد يكون في شكل انقسام أو فتح في الشفة العليا وحدها، أو قد تمتد عبر سقف الفم، والذي يعرف باسم الحنك، وتصل إلى الحلق. الأطفال المتضررين مع الشفة المشقوقة والحنك قد يعانون من مختلف المشاكل بما في ذلك؛ التغذية وصعوبات في النطق والاتصال ومشاكل التفاعل الاجتماعي، وقد تؤثر سلباً على المظهر و الحالة النفسية للطفل المصاب.

يحتاج الأطفال الذين يعانون من الشفة المشقوقة والحنك الخضوع لسلسلة من العمليات الجراجية وبشكل منتظم الاستشارات الطبية وخدمات طب الأسنان في جميع السنوات الأولى من حياتهم.
