Summary:


Listening 1 is a listening course which aims at developing students’ abilities to understand


spoken English, grasp the main ideas in given speeches, answer questions about them and take


down notes of their major aspects. Different types of situations are provided through


cassettes played in class. Students should be able to follow up with these cassettes and give


answers to various kinds of questions. These include objective questions as well as


information questions. All required skills for grasping native speakers’ language are taught


throughout the course. For example, students are taught how to observe the pronunciation of


different words as well as identical/similar pronunciations of words, contractions in spoken


language, expressions and idioms used in spoken English as well as words with more than one


meaning in different contexts.


Class assignments: The students are always required to participate in class by giving the


right answers to the questions of the material discussed in class.


Objectives:


By the end of the course, students should be able to:


1- understand the language on a cassette being played


2- grasp the main ideas of different situations on cassettes


3- take down notes of these main ideas


4- answer different types of questions after listening to the cassette


5- check that they have given the right answer or taken down the right notes after listening


to the cassette for the second time


Grading system:


Students are given 2 midterm exams & a final exam to evaluate their progress. The exams are


given as follows:


Midterm 1: Midterm 1 includes all the


chapters, tasks and exercises taught in class from the beginning of classes until that time. The


exam will be marked out of 25.


Midterm 2: It will cover all what is


taught from midterm 1 until midterm 2. It will be marked out of 25.


Final exam: This exam will be given at the end of the semester. It will include all the chapters,


tasks and exercises of Interactions 1. It is marked out of40.
