Aims and goals/ skills of
the course:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Comprehend the principles of dental radiography
2. Understand biological aspects of radiation and protection
3. Identify factors affecting image, projection geometry image characteristics
4. Identify components parts of dental X-ray film
5. Describe the basic principles of intra-oral radiographic techniques;
periapical radiography, bitewing radiography
6. Identify the principles of processing of dental X-ray film
7. Identify different anatomical landmarks as presented in intra-oral
radiographs
8. Identify radiographic errors and how to correct them
9. Make radiographic interpretations of periodontal diseases and dental caries.
Content of the course:
Introduction to Dental Radiolo gy
Principles of x ray production, factors affecting the quality & quantity of X rays
produced and factors influencing the image quality;
Biological aspects of radiation and protection;
X ray films
Infection control in dental radiography
Principles of Periapical radiography
a) Paralleling Technique
b) Bisecting angle technique
Bite-wing radiographs
Processing of radiographs; Common errors in dental radiography; Quality
assurance procedures;
Principles of radiographic interpretation.
Different anatomical landmarks as presented in intraoral radiographs.
Interpretation of periodontal diseases and dental caries
Radiographic interpretation of other dental anomalies, periapical cyst, tumor and
denal/alveolar fractures.
Examination Written theory examination with objective type and short note type questions.
Practical examination – Make a radiographic exposure, process and interpret.
