PHCL-416 - THERAPEUTICS-I  (3+0)

Course Description

The Course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate and to apply the multiple components of their knowledge of the basic pharmaceutical sciences to formulate the safe and most rational drug regimen for a given patient.
The course consists of both lectures and conferences. Students will gain an understanding of rational drug therapy in the treatment of selected diseases, problems associated with  implementing rational drug therapy; how therapy concepts correlate with the pathophysiology of the disease; and the monitoring parameters necessary for evaluation of drug therapy.  Throughout the semester students will develop communication skills as they present and discuss material from case studies and current literatures with their peers and instructors.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course is to:
1. Illustrate the appropriate clinical application of basic pharmacology and pharmacokinetics principles to specific patient problems.
2. Correlate the pathophysiology of different diseases, how they affect selection of drugs and decisions required for optimal drug therapy.
3.   Establish a system problem solving approach to the selection of therapeutic regimens based upon specific patient needs (the SOAP format).
4. Subjective objective assignment & plan
Upon complesion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Make a rational and justifyable judgement regarding the selection and dosing of a particular drug therapy for a specific patient.2. Monitor drug therapy in term of effectiveness, side effects, and toxicities.
The objectives of the conference sessions are to enable the students to experience the challenges of drug related questions frequently asked by physicians; simulating actual practice situations, where the students are taught to analyze the pathophysiology and medical management of disease states, selection of the drug(s) of choice and the appropriate drug alternatives; and communication of such information in a concise and rational manner.
