Course Code: Najd 118

Credit Hours: 4

Days: Tues 10-12, Wed 12-2

Description:

This is a basically preliminary, introductory translation course that prepares students for the coming translation courses included in the English Department study plan.  Focus is exclusively on translating English passages into Arabic. In the process, students are to be essentially trained (via examples) on recognizing the major differences between an English sentences and an Arabic one. Students will also be trained on the various forms a sentence-in-translation might take in the target language depending on the structure of a sentence in the source language. The majority of our work will run in translation workshops through which students are to use their own dictionaries; individual, peer, and group work sessions will be conducted alternatively in class.

Objectives:

  1. Summary of the main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course

Students will be able to:

  • Translate unseen short passages from English to Arabic.
  • Differentiate between the structural and semantic elements between the two languages.
  • Compare the English language to their native language.

   2. Briefly describe any plans for developing and improving the course that are being implemented. (eg increased use of IT or web based reference material, changes in content as a result of new research in the field).

  • Providing students with web-based exercises for extra training.
  • Communicating with students through teacher website by posting course related information and receiving student feedback.
