POLLINATION BIOLOGY AND SPATIO-TEMPORAL STRUCTURING OF SOME MAJOR ACACIA SPECIES (LEGUMINOSAE) OF THE ARABIAN PENINSULA

Acacias are the dominant woody plant species distributed over the vast tracts of land throughout the Arabian Peninsula. However, information on spatio-temporal structuring and pollination biology of the species is not precisely available. To determine whether any variations exist among the Acacia species in their temporal distribution, their flowering period was determined through monitoring the commencing, peaking and ending of flowering of each species.

NATURAL NEST CHARACTERISTICS OF APIS MELLIFERA JEMENITICA (HYMENOPTERA; APIDAE) AND ITS IMPLICATIONS IN FRAME HIVE ADOPTION

Apis mellefera jemenitica is the smallest race of A. mellifera both in its body and colony sizes. In the current study we assessed the natural nest volume, workers brood cell dimensions and bee space of the race through measuring their dimensions from naturally built combs in log hives. The optimum box hive volume and surface area requirement were assessed by keeping colonies at different volumes of frame hives with four replications each and monitored for a period of one year.

THE CHARACTERIZATION OF BLOSSOM HONEYS FROM TWO PROVINCES OF PAKISTAN

This study characterized fifteen blossom honeys collected from eleven locations in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provinces of Pakistan.

Nesting biology of two species of the large carpenter bees Xylocopa pubescens and Xylocopa fenestrata Hymenoptera Apidae in north western Pakistan

The large carpenter bees are very promising pollinators for many agriculture crops. The nesting biology and some foraging activities of these large carpenter bees are documented from the north-western Pakistan, most extent of its natural distribution, as these species are potentially important pollinators of cucurbit crops and some agriculture crops in the region.

Role of honey in modern medicine

Use of honey has a very long history. Honey has been used since ancient time due to its nutritional and therapeutic values. There had been varied ways of consumption honey including its use as a sweetener and flavoring agent. Honey is produced all over the world. The most important nutriment of honey is carbohydrates present in the form of monosaccharides, fructose and glucose. Honey plays an important role as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial agent and augments the adherence of skin grafts and wound healing process.

Comparative analysis of profitability of honey production using traditional and box hives

Information on the profitability and productivity of box hives is important to encourage beekeepers to adopt the technology. However, comparative analysis of profitability and productivity of box and traditional hives is not adequately available. The study was carried out on 182 beekeepers using cross sectional survey and employing a random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Cobb-Douglas (CD) production function and partial budgeting.

Fertility and reproductive rate of Varroa mite, Varroa destructor, in native and exotic honeybee, Apis mellifera L., colonies under Saudi Arabia conditions

Varroa mite is the most destructive pest to bee colonies worldwide. In Saudi Arabia, preliminary data indicated high infestation levels in the exotic honeybee colonies; such as Apis mellifera carnica and Apis mellifera ligustica, compared to native honeybee subspecies Apis mellifera jemenitica, which may imply higher tolerance to Varroasis.

Honey and Diabetes Mellitus: Obstacles and Challenges - Road to be Repaired

Background and objective

Since ancient times, honey has been used due to its nutritional and therapeutic value. The role of honey has been acknowledged in the scientific literature however, its use has been controversially discussed and has not been well accepted in modern medicine especially for diabetic patients. This study aimed to investigate the role of honey in diabetic patients.

Methods

Determining spatio-temporal distribution of bee forage species of Al-baha region based on ground inventorying supported with GIS applications and remote sensed satellite image analysis

In arid zones, the shortage of bee forage is critical and usually compels beekeepers to move their colonies in search of better forages. Identifying and mapping the spatiotemporal distribution of the bee forages over given area is important for better management of bee colonies. In this study honey bee plants in the target areas were inventoried following, ground inventory work supported with GIS applications. The study was conducted on 85 large plots of 50 × 50 m each.
