Migration of reticulated hyaluronic acid implant [SK-GEL] following deep sclerectomy

A new complication after deep sclerectomy with implant is presented as a case report. A 42-year-old male with uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma underwent nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS) with an SK-GEL implant in his left eye. Two months after surgery the implant was noted to migrate into the subconjunctival space. Seven months later the implant was stable in the new position without complication. Implant migration into the subconjunctival space is a possible complication of NPDS.

Controlled Cyclophotocoagulation with diode laser in refractory glaucoma and long term follow up at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Riyadh

Abstract

Purpose

To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of controlled contact transscleral diode laser Cyclophotocoagulation (COCO) procedure in reducing the Intraocular Pressure (IOP) among patients with refractory glaucoma.

Methods

Comparison of central corneal thickness measurements using Pentacam and ultrasonic pachymetry in post-LASIK eyes for myopia

Purpose. To compare central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements obtained using the Pentacam
Scheimpflug system with those obtained using DGH ultrasound pachymetry (UP) in post–laser in situ
keratomileusis (LASIK) eyes for myopia.
Methods. In a prospective study, measurement agreement was assessed in 143 eyes of 72 post-LASIK
patients using both the Pentacam and UP at the Eye Consultants Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Results. The mean CCT was 522±42.2 μm with the Oculus Pentacam and 516.2±40.6 μm with UP.

Analysis of LOXL1 polymorphisms in a Saudi Arabian population with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma

associated with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEG) in the Saudi Arabian population.
Methods: The coding regions of LOXL1 were fully sequenced in 93 clinically diagnosed PEG patients and 101 healthy
controls. Both groups were Saudi Arabs. Previously reported and newly identified SNPs were evaluated for possible
association with PEG and their pathological consequences on the gene were assessed.
Results: The “G” allele frequencies of both rs1048661 and rs3825942 SNPs differed between PEG patients and control

Sedation characteristics of melatonin and midazolam for premedication of adult patients undergoing cataract surgery under local anaesthesia

This prospective, double blind placebo controlled study is designed to compare the effects of sublingual melatonin versus midazolam for premedication of adult patients scheduled to undergo cataract surgery under local anaesthesia. Seventy five patients ASA1&2 ranged from 40-70 yr scheduled for cataract surgery procedure were studied. Patients were classified into 3 groups. Group 1 received midazolam, group 2 received melatonin and group 3 received placebo. Patients in group 1 received sublingual 0.5% midazolam solution 0.1mg/kg body weight.

Post-traumatic Aspergillus scleritis

Abstract
Fungal infection involving the sclera is extremely rare.  We report a case of a 53-year old man who developed post-traumatic Aspergillus fungal scleritis after trauma caused by branch of a tree.  Diagnosis was made after tissue biopsy and successful outcomewas achieved by scleral debridement, dura patch graft and topical Amphotericine B.  The patient had no signs of infection for 6 months after discontinuation of medication.

Misdiagnosis of spasm near reflex

Abstract:
Spasm of the near reflex is characterized by intermittent attacks of convergence, accommodation and miosis.  It typically affectsyoung adultsand is frequently psychogenic.  The author describes the case of a 17-year-old female with spasm of the near reflex manifesting with headache, diplopia, reduced vision, esotropia, and limitation of abduction.  The case re-emphasizes the importance of considering spasm of the near reflex in the differential diagnosis of any patient with esotropia associated with headache and reduced vision.
