هذا المقرر يغطي المواضيع المتعلقة بالطرق والأدوات المستخدمة في فحص النباتات الطبية والبحث عن محتوياتها الفعالية ويناقش التطورات المستجدة فيما يتعلق بطرق استخراج هذه المواد وفصلها وتنقيتها.


المواضيع التالية سيتم تغطيتها في هذا المقرر :


General concepts, Medicinal Plants Information Sources, Phytochemical Screening , Screening for bioactive plant constituents, Specific extraction procedures, Applications of chromatographic separation techniques, Characterization of the active constituents by physical and chemical methods, Application of the spectroscopic techniques for the identification of the isolated compounds and interpretation of their spectral data

Course Description:
The course covers the methods and techniques employed for screening medicinal plants for their bioactive constituents. It also discusses recent developments regarding methods of extrac­tion, isolation, purification and spectroscopic identification of plant bioactive constituents. The following subjects will be covered: General concepts, Medicinal Plants Information Sources, Phytochemical Screening , Screening for bioactive plant constituents, Specific extraction procedures, Applications of chromatographic separation techniques, Characterization of the active constituents by physical and chemical methods, Application of the spectroscopic techniques for the identification of the isolated compounds and interpretation of their spectral data.  The course also will deal with the different methods for evaluation of herbal products and drugs derived from them as stated in the Pharmacopeias. In addition, the methods of detection of foreign matters and impurities will be covered.

10.1-     Evaluation methods of market samples containing Glycosides.(eg.Cardiac  glycosides,anthraquinones,flavonoids, saponins, coumarin etc.

11.1-       Evaluation methods of market samples containing Fixed and volatile oils eg.( castor . olive,cod liver ,clove lavander and  cinnamon oil.

11.2-      physical : tests for volatility,specific gravity and refractive  Index.


11.3-       chemical test fixed oils , tests for adultrants: (Halphen, Baudwin,Rancidity).                               


11.4-         chromatographic (TLC)


11.5-        Determination of iodine and acid value of some fixed oils eg. Castor oils.
