Course Description

 

The Biostatistics course will provide a basic introduction to the conceptual and quantitative tools used to describe and interpret data for students in the biological, life, and health sciences.

 

The topics include:

 

1.    Data collection, graphical displays of data, and  descriptive statistics

2.    Basic concepts of probability and sampling distributions

3.    Continuous distributions including normal and t-distribution

4.    Confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.   

 

 

Course General Objectives

 

By the end of this course each student should be able to:

 

  • Explain basic concepts of statistics.
  • Summarize numeric data by computing descriptive statistics and by creating tables and graphs.

·         Know and apply the basic concepts of probability and sampling distributions.

·         Identify and use the characteristics of the normal probability distribution and the Central Limit Theorem.

·         Explain, calculate, and interpret inferential statistics including estimates and hypothesis tests about population parameters.
