MIS 201Principles of Management Information System

Course description:  This course introduces the principles of management information systems. In particular, the MIS 206 course provides students with the educational background to the technologies of information systems and to then development of large-scale information systems. Please note that the material presented in this course takes a management approach rather than a technical approach.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course the students will have an insight into the concepts of management information systems (MIS), information systems (IS) and electronic business (e-business). Students will explore the tools and techniques associated with the process of management information systems that align with organizational demands and needs. After completing the course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • Define and describe the process of a system development life cycle to support organizational operations.
  •  Understand how organizations use and manipulate information systems to meet organizational needs and goals.
  •  Demonstrate their abilities to plan, design, develop and evaluate information systems using different approaches that align with organizations needs, and meet their objectives. This will be undertaken through the use of case studies throughout the semester. 
  •  Identify the role of information systems in influencing decision making processes.

Supplementary materials:  The materials required for MIS 206 course is available in an electronic version on the MIS 206 course website. It is highly recommended that students print the required material for each class and have them available.
Grading:

  • Course work (60%)

    • Two midterm exams - 40% (20% each)
    • Assignments - 5%
    • Lab sessions -  15%
  • Final exam (40%) (2 hours)
