PHT 426 - Pharmaceutical Biotechnology I

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (PHT426) course covers different spects of pharmaceutical biotechnology with emphases on pharmaceutical protein production, gene therapy, biotechnology-based vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies. The course covers general concepts and techniques for pharmaceutical proteins production using recombinant DNA technology. The module focuses on recombinant DNA expression systems and culture conditions, scaling up and manufacturing considerations, isolation and purification of recombinant proteins, protein pharmaceutical stability that dictates the need for proper formulation and delivery strategies. Moreover, the course covers basic gene therapy concepts, types of gene therapy, viral and non-viral vectors for gene delivery, as well as different gene therapy strategies and clinical trials. Furthermore, two main immunological applications of pharmaceutical biotechnology products i.e. biotechlology vaccines and monoclonal antibodies are also covered.
