This paper presents a design and realization of a multimedia ATM network based on a developed structure of a self routing packet network called the Plane Interconnected Parallel Network (PIPN). Performance evaluation of the PIPN switch and the network is evaluated analytically and by simulation. Several important network design parameters are computed, among which are network throughput, transmission delay, and response time. The power of the network is also computed by which a best network operating point can be obtained. The network has been tested using several types of multimedia traffic, such as page of text, 24-bit image, voice, stereo audio, and full motion video as well as mixed traffic. The study also includes the effect of the compressed data and noisy data on network performance. The results obtained are compared with other similar networks such as Banyan network and the proposed network achieved better performance.
