Statistics 550 CHS
Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes:
The topics include:
- Data collection, graphical displays of data, and descriptive & inferential statistics.
- Basic concepts of probability and sampling distributions
- Continuous distributions including normal and t-distribution
- Confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.
- Course General Objectives
- By the end of this course each student should be able to:
- Explain basic concepts of statistics.
- Summarize numeric data by computing descriptive statistics and by creating tables and graphs.
- Know and apply the basic concepts of probability and sampling distributions.
- Identify and use the characteristics of the normal probability distribution and the Central Limit Theorem.
- Explain, calculate, and interpret inferential statistics including estimates and hypothesis tests about population parameters.
- Interpret and explain a p-value
- Understand and interpret results from Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), a technique used to compare means amongst more than two independent populations
