ENG 154 (Science/Engineering Track)

With a focus on English for Academic Purposes for plus proficiency students, the course emphasizes on the academic skills of reading and writing, oral communication and aural comprehension. The integration of the skills serves as the primary objective and a progression from the general communication skills acquired at prerequisite courses. Students build reading fluency, increase comprehension of English language texts and discourse and broaden vocabulary by means of authentic academic material. The course promotes the key writing sub-skills of summarizing, paraphrasing and editing where the process of planning, revising and editing is supported. Speaking and listening are taught in an interactive context, equipping students with strategies for effective communication appropriate for professional and academic settings.

 

Language skills presented in the pre-requisite courses; ENG 142 and ENG 143 are expanded in this mid-high proficiency course (B1). Students study Q:Skills 2 in the first half of Semester 2 and Headway Academic Skills 2 in the second half.
