PHYS 653 QUANTUM ELECTRODYNAMICS (PhD)

The Lagrangian & Hamiltonian of the classical EM field. Canonical Quantizaation of the EM field. Gauge invariance. The Coulomb and the Lorentz gauge. The minimal coupling Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge. Quantum Electrodynamics in the Coulomb gauge. The interaction Hamiltonian between the EM field and bound charges. Unitary transformations and equivalent formulations of QED. The Goppert -Mayer transformation.The equivalance between A.p and E.r. The Henneberger transformation. The Power-Zienau-Wooley transformation. The multipole form of the interaction between charges and field. One photon and two-photon processes. Covariant formulation of Quantum Electrodynamics.
