Alyousef, Hesham Suleiman . 2020
This chapter reviews working with systemic functional linguistics—and specifically grammatics or metalanguage—for supporting the development of ESL/EFL students’ reading comprehension skills. He connects research findings to the actual literacy practices that form the basis for an effective reading curriculum with implications for reading instruction. He explains how the functional knowledge-based language approach engages students in analysis about language,
drawing their awareness to the content and organisation of texts.
