English Language 1

NGR 110

Students of the Career Program will take this pre-intermediate general English course at the first level. This course will cover basic language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By the end of this course, students are expected to gain proficiency in all English skills. Topics dealt with in the course are selected from everyday life experiences.

3 Unit 3 GRAMMAR: there is/there are; this/these – that/those; plurals (-s, -es); prepositions of place (in front of, in, on, next to, behind, under)
VOCABULARY: houses/homes; furniture & appliances
READING: advertisements for houses; Culture point - houses around the world
WRITING: letter to a friend; advertisement for a house/flat to rent
4 Unit 4 GRAMMAR: possessive case; possessive adjectives/pronouns; whose/who’s; present simple
VOCABULARY: family relationships; free-time activities; days of the week
READING: letters to pen-friends
WRITING: family tree; a letter to a pen friend
5 Unit 5 GRAMMAR: adverbs of frequency; prepositions of time (at, in, on)
VOCABULARY: daily routines; telling the time; months; pros and cons of jobs
READING: article about a person’s daily routine; Culture Point - opening hours in Holland
WRITING: opening hours in your country, article about a celebrity’s daily routine

WRITING: what you were like at the age of seven; a “then-and-now” article

1st midterm exam (written and oral): 25%
2nd midterm exam (written and oral): 25%
