DEN 183: Dental Informatics

Course Description

This course is designed to provide first-year students with knowledge and skills about Dental Informatics. Students will learn how data, information, and knowledge are created, managed and processed using Information and Communication Technology. This course will also introduce the students to introduction to medical informatics, clinical data, electronic medical (dental) record, computerized physician order entry, patient safety, clinical decision support, ethics & confidentiality, consumer health informatics, dental informatics.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, students will be able:

  1. To introduce dental students to Health Informatics as a discipline.

  2. To understand the current trends in health informatics as they apply to the healthcare

    field and the dental profession.

  3. Grow dental students' awareness of the ways in which information technology is

    dentistry.

  4. To be familiar with Electronic Dental Records uses and concepts

  5. Identify various types of information systems used within healthcare institutions.

  6. Perform online search in medical, pharmaceutical and other health literature through

    the World Wide Web (WWW).
