Publication Abstract:
The thesis tackles Charlotte Bronte's deep interest in the East as reflected in her four major novels, The Professor, Jane Eyre, Shirley and Villette. Starting with her Juvenilia, the thesis traces the interest to its earliest roots and finds that it survives till the end of Bronte's career. However, the early fascination with the East takes a different form at mid career under the influence of Bronte's growing awareness of the victorian cultural values.
