Course Title: Translation 1 (Translation from E to A and from A to E)

Course description:


This course is a more advanced version of 118. In 212, you are exposed to more complex vocabulary and longer passages to translate from English to Arabic and vise versa. Also, the passages you will be given will come from your day to day life. Hopefully, at the end of the semester you will have learned how to accurately translate anything for anyone who can’t speak or write either Arabic or English.


Course requirements:


-          Attend class regularly. If you are absent for 25% of you classes, you will be warned. If you are absent 50%, you will be banned from the final exam.


-          Come to class on time. If you are late for more than 10 minutes, for the first time, you will be noticed. If you are late for the second time, you are counted as absent.


-          Participate fully in class.


-          In class, you must turn off your cell phones, and cease all conversations that are not related to your course.


-          If you missed a class, it is your responsibility to contact your classmates to find out what you missed and what is required for the next class.


-          Please make sure that you attend all scheduled exams (midterms and quizzes) since there will be no makeup exams.


-          If you are assigned a presentation and you do not show up, you will not be given another chance to do the presentation.


-          Final projects will not be accepted after the deadline specified in the schedule.


 


Syllabus:


Copies of different Arabic and English passages are provided in a booklet by instructor which you will find in the copy center and students are asked to translate a certain passage in a given time while instructor helps with tips of how to go about a certain text, then students' translation are worked on board so students are able to differentiate between a good and a weak translation.

Summary of the main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course:


 


1.      Students will translate unseen English passages to proper Arabic and vice versa in a given time.


2.      Students will be able to use the dictionary effectively to precisely translate difficult vocabularies within their context.


3.      Students will practice different kinds of passages while emphasizing the importance of remaining faithful to the text in providing the general meaning of a certain passage.
