Course objectives

  1. To gain knowledge regarding different types of nurological diseases, their pathophysiologies, causes, and treatments.
  2. To gain knowledge regarding different psyhiatric illnesses, their pathophysiologies, causes, and treatments.

Learning outcomes

(understanding, knowledge, and intellectual and scientific skills)  After studying this course, the student is expected to be able to:

1.Provide a solid understanding of the pathophysiology associated with of nurology and
2.Understand the basic mechanisms of neurotransmitter  andpsycatric mechanisms  and interpret these mechanisms in relation to drug therapy
3.Recognize major signs and symptoms of selected disease states

  1. Integrate pharmacology, pathophysiology, pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetics and other biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences as they pertain to clinical therapeutics of the specific disorders.
  2. Select optimal therapeutic agents based on drug pharmacology whichaccount for relative drug potencies, efficacies and therapeutic outcomes.
  3. Select and recommend appropriate patient focused drug therapy treatment plans.
  4. Apply treatment guidelines and protocols for selected patient populations.
  5. Address and prevent drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, and drug nutraceutical interactions by applying knowledge of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles.
  6. Evaluate the appropriateness of patient specific drug therapy regimen and treatment plans.
  7. Monitor expected therapeutic outcomes and potential adverse effects of drug therapy.
  8. Use problem solving skills and knowledge to solve therapeutic cases.
  9. Tailor general therapeutic protocols to individual patients
  10. Interpret drug response using subjective and objective criteria, including laboratory measures and physical findings.
  11. Formulate approaches to monitor patient response to a given drug regimen.

Attendance:

The online and class attendance and participation is expected. The only excused absence is either a medical illness, College-administration approved leave (e.g. professional meeting attendance), or a personal emergency. Any reason must be supported with written documentation. In case of medical illness, a written note approved by King Saud University students’ academic affairs is mandatory. The written documentation must be presented to the Course Director(s) within 2 school days of the missed class session unless an extended leave is required. If a leave of 2 or more school days is needed, directly contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as soon as possible. Contacting the Dean’s office and expecting them to inform the course director is not acceptable. Any reason other than those defined above is an unexcused absence.

Examination Attendance Policy:

All students must take online or in-class examinations as scheduled and instructed by the course directors, except in the case of medical illness, College Administration approved leave, or personal emergency supported by written documentation. Anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late to an in-class exam will not be allowed to take the exam without permission from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. If you expect to miss an examination for an authorized reason, you must contact the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs by e-mail or phone as soon as you are aware of the problem and ideally before the scheduled start time of the examination. Contacting the Dean’s office and expecting them to inform the course director is not acceptable. Any reason for missing an exam must be supported with written documentation. The written documentation must be presented to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs within 24 hours of the scheduled exam time and before a make-up examination is administered. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, students who miss an examination for any excused reasons, will take that exam within 2 business days or as the course directors determine. Any reason other than those defined above for missing an exam or any deviation from above stated policy is an unexcused absence and will result in a grade of zero (0) for that examination.

Professional Conduct:

It is expected that students will act in a professional manner in all interactions with the Course Directors and Co-Directors, course instructors, support staff, and other students. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action, as determined by the Course Director(s). Please refrain from being disruptive during the online and onsite classes (e.g., turn off cell phones before a session starts). Students who want to talk or use their cell phones for any reason are more than welcome to leave the class at any time without any disruption.

Communication and Questions:

For topic related questions, please e-mail the course Director or Co-Directors regarding the corresponding topics, other than that you can email the course Director(s) directly. Expect a response within 48 hours, but do not expect a reply during weekends or holidays.
