Paramedic Student Progress in Medication Calculation

Introduction: Emergency Medical Service (EMS) involves the use of certain emergency medications to save lives. A student who is trained to be a paramedic should be adequately skilled to properly calculate the dosage of medications. This study aims to determine paramedic students’ ability and their progress in medication calculation while studying in an EMS Program in Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz College for EMS (PSCEMS), King Saud University (KSU), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Method: A longitudinal and post-interventional study was conducted twice at the end of the semester tests on 15 June 2015 and 27 May 2017 at PSCEMS. The interventions applied were a three-credit hours Emergency Medications course offered in the 4th semester (2015) and a five-credit hours Critical and Intensive Care Practice course offered in the 8th semester (2017). Result: The results illustrated a fairly satisfying level of performance in the first test. The result, however, showed variability in the students’ performance in both tests. Students scored higher in the first test, as 75.13% of students in the 4th semester solved 5 questions correctly whereas only 48.42% of students from the 8th semester scored them correctly in the second test. Conclusion: Paramedic students exhibited some strength in medication calculation immediately after completing pharmacology course. Their ability, however, started diminishing as they proceeded in the EMS program. Therefore, ongoing educational opportunities in medication calculation are suggested to enhance paramedic students’ competency
