Phytochemical study of Fatsia japonica led to the isolation of seven secondary metabolites 1-7. Their structures were established as 3-O-α-L-arabinopyranosyl-hederagenin (1), 3-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-hederagenin (2), 8-O-4/8-O-4-dehydrotriferulic acid (3), 8-O-4-dehydrodiferulic acid (4), (6R,9R)-roseoside (5), oxyresveratrol (6) and protocatechuic acid (7) on the basis of various spectroscopic analyses including 1D- (1H,13C, and DEPT) and 2D-NMR (COSY, NOESY, HMQC, and HMBC) and by comparison of their spectral data with those of related compounds. Compounds 3–6 were obtained for the first time in the family Araliaecae, while compound 7 was reported for the first time from the genus Fatsia. Compounds 1 and 2 are very common in F. japonica. The presence of compounds 3–6 in the family Araliaceae is very unusual and may constitute an index for chemotaxonomic characterization of the genus.
