BCH 452 Biomembrane and Cell signalling

Course Aims:

  • To understand the basic properties, composition and function of the Biomembrane.
  • To know the detailed structure of the fluid mosaic model and various techniques involved in elucidating these structure.
  • To know the detail structure of the specialized cells such as neuron, nephron, and muscle cell. The know the structure of the internal cell membrane of various organelles such as endolplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and chloroplast.
  • To understand different modes of transport across the membrane and the thermodynamics of energy depended and independent pathways.
  • To know the concept of multicellular signalling and various forms of intracellular signalling pathways.
  • To describe the signalling pathways involved in response to the signalling molecule such as hormones, growth factors and mechanical waves such as light in the propagation of vision.  Learning outcomes:

  • The students should be able to describe the natural and synthetic membrane structure, the use of different techniques in isolating and study of the membrane.
  • They should be able to envisage the fluid mosaic model and can name the different modes of transport across the membrane.
  • To appreciate the structure function correlation of specialized cells.
  • To be able to differentiate between the different types of signaling molecules and the chain of events following their binding to the receptors in the membrane.
