BCH 450 Biochemistry of specialized Tissues

Course Aims:
 

  • To understand what do we mean by connective tissues and its classification. To know the types of collagen, its biosynthesis and its disorder.
  • To understand the types of muscle and the detailed mechanism of sliding filament theory of contraction and the energy requirement for various types of muscles.
  • To know the detailed structure of neuron and its role in propagation of nerve impulse. To understand the role of various neurotransmitter in mediating action potential.
  • To know the detail structure of kidney and its role as a homeostatic organ.
  • To know the liver as a metabolic and detoxification organ and detail biochemistry of its metabolism.Learning outcomes:
     
  • To know the meaning of connective tissue and its classification
  • To appreciate the diversity present in the collagen types. To know the biosynthesis and assembly of collagen and elastin and their role in various connective tissue disorder.
  • To have a clear concept of types of protein present in the muscle and their role in the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of muscle.
  • To understand the energy expense of various types of muscle.
  • To understand the detail mechanism of action potential and the events occurring at synapse.
  • To know the detail structure of kidney and its role as a homeostatic organ.
  • To know the metabolic and detoxification role of liver.
