Mortality of emergency abdominal surgery in high-, middle- and low-income countries.

BACKGROUND:
Surgical mortality data are collected routinely in high-income countries, yet virtually no low- or middle-income countries have outcome surveillance in place. The aim was prospectively to collect worldwide mortality data following emergency abdominal surgery, comparing findings across countries with a low, middle or high Human Development Index (HDI).

Effect of Insulin Therapy using Hyper-insulinemic Normoglycemic Clamp on Inflammatory Response in Brain Dead Organ Donors

BACKGROUND:

Brain death is a major stress that is associated with a massive inflammatory response and systemic hyperglycemia. Severe inflammation leads to increased graft immunogenicity and risk of graft dysfunction; while acute hyperglycemia aggravates the inflammatory response and increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. Insulin therapy not only controls hyperglycemia but also suppresses inflammation. The present study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties and the normoglycemia maintenance of high dose insulin on brain dead organ donors.

Controlling Temperature and Relative Humidity in Greenhouses Using a Liquid Desiccant Dehumidification System

Although evaporative cooling systems are beneficial in greenhouses, relative humidity is increased. Some increase in relative humidity reduces evapotranspiration and can be beneficial for plants. However, above certain levels, problems with diseases and fungi occur. Thus, it would be beneficial to find a way to utilize evaporative cooling that produces cooled air below a desired humidity. This study investigated the possibility of using a flow of liquid desiccant to both reduce the humidity and the energy associated with condensation from the system.
