The Beneficial Effect of Cape Gooseberry Juice on Carbon Tetrachloride- Induced Neuronal Damage

Abstract: Objective: Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) belongs to the Solanaceae family.
Physalis has many medicinal properties however, the beneficial effect of physalis in protecting against
neurotoxins has not yet been evaluated. This experimental study investigated the protective effect of
physalis juice against the oxidative damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the rat brain.
Methods: The degrees of protection by physalis in brain tissues were evaluated by determining the brain levels of lipid

Improvement of Carotenoid Pigments Produced by Rhodotorula glutinis

Abstract: Wild strain of the red yeast Rhodotorula glutinis was isolated from different food sources (dates, milk,
sausage, and sugarcane). Trails for studying the carotenoids productivity of this strain [volumetric production (μg/l)
and cellular carotenoids (μg/g)] were carried out using different carbon sources, nitrogen sources, organic acids and
mineral salts. The major carotenoid pigments comprising ß-carotene, torulene and torularhodi. It was found that at

Linkage Analysis of Class III Phenotype and Human Chromosome 1

Objective: Genetic markers were genotyped spanning the 1p22.1-22.2 region, within the Erythrocyte Membrane Protein Band 4.1 (EPB4.1) gene at 1p36 and within the Matrillin-1 (MATN1)gene to examine their potential genetic linkage to the Class III phenotype in two South American family-based cohorts. All three tested loci have previously been implicated in Class III dentofacial deformities. Method: Forty-one families (1,306 individuals) from Brazil and Colombia participated in this study after providing formal informed consent.
