We will focus in this course on following topics: • The evolution of the international monetary system. • The Balance of payments deficit and correction mechanisms. • Theories of the balance of payments: the elasticities approach, the absorption approach and the monetary approach.   • Nominal and real exchange rates. • The exchange rates and the various monetary systems. • Theories of exchange rates determination:  the balance of payments, purchasing power parity, the monetary approach, and the assets portfolio approach.

This course aims to introduce to the students the methods used to measure and test the economic theories and relations both at the micro and the macro levels.  Students are trained on how to build and describe economic models and convert a model of a mathematical form to a standard econometric form.  And then the use of the linear and non-linear regression analysis by the means of least squares OLS and simultaneous equations.

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with more rigorous explanation and analysis of macroeconomic concepts and theories by an application of an IS/LM model to the main macroeconomic variables.

The study of this course starts with the definition of the main concepts of the principles of macroeconomic. Then it elaborates on the methods of measuring gross domestic product and the determination of the level of national’s income. Within the frame of the simple Keynesian macro -model students are introduced the hypotheses related to the consumption and investment functions, as well as the effect of the fiscal and monetary policies on the level of income and the main aggregate variables.  The role of money and its relation the general price level is discussed.
