HI 507- Integration, Interoperability, Standards Class

This course will explore the details of healthcare standards, vocabularies, and clinical terminologies. Throughout the course, we will talk about the benefits of integrating healthcare information systems as well as the challenges of integrating healthcare systems across disparate organizations and technologies.  Students will spend the course learning about HL7, SNOMED CT, CDA, LONIC, CDA, CCR, ICD-10, PACS, and DICOM. Students will have a midterm paper about one of the main topics discussed in the course and a final exam on the last day of the course.

STUDENT LEARNING GOALS:
At the completion of the Integration, Interoperability, Standards, Clinical Terminologies, and Vocabularies course, students should be able to:

  • Define and describe clinical vocabularies and terminologies used in the organization’s health information systems
  • Understand the benefits of standards-based HIT interoperability
  • Recognize appropriate clinical classification systems as to their uses and sources
  • Apply the classification systems knowledge to healthcare information systems to promote effective and efficient communication for healthcare organizations and patients
  • Demonstrate how to utilize appropriate HIT standards in an integration project
  • Understand the policy issues related to health data exchange
