MBI 661- Spore Biology

This is an Spore Biology doctorate student course in Botany and Microbiology Department. In this class, the student will become familiar with the history of spores, defining and classifying them according to structure, movement and function, in addition to identifying the mechanics of their formation, germination, life cycle and their role in pollution and infection.
The experiments, assignments, projects, and other activities in this course are designed to help students to learn the principles of spore biology, and report their presentation topic clearly and concisely, both in oral and written form. Students are expected to show up for class on time and be prepared for the class activities, work diligently, ask questions and participate in class discussions.
Lecture Topics
1 History and Etymology for spore,
2 Definition, forms, places of deployment
3 Mechanisms of formation and germination of spores
4 Classification of spore-producing organisms (Plants,Microbes)
5 Classification of spores (By spore-producing structure, By motility, By function, By origin during life cycle)
6 Homosporous and Heterosporous; monolete and trilete
7 Resistance to environmental factors
8 Their role in the microbial dispersal,
9 pollution and infection

Evaluation:
Individual Written Scientific Report and Presentation 20 points
Mid Term Exam 20 points
Laboratory Exam 20 points
Final exam 40 points
No electronic devices of any kind will be permitted during the exams.
If you cannot attend the Final exam for a valid reason (illness, accident, family
crisis), it is your responsibility to inform me as soon as possible and provide suitable
documentation (doctor’s note or counselor’s note).
