Optical Character Recognition “OCR” is the process that transforms an image of characters (printed or handwritten) into an electronic editable text. Thus, it involves many subdisciplines including image processing, pattern recognition, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and database systems.
The subject of character recognition has been paid considerable attention in the last decades due to the advancement in information technology. OCR can improve the interaction between man and machine in many applications and it has been applied throughout the entire spectrum of industries. Its role in automation process is growing significantly.
The implementation of Arabic OCR with high recognition rate requires building suitable system permitting to overcome the difficulties associated with the characteristics of Arabic language.
On the other hand, the segmentation stage is playing an important role in OCR systems. Its output affects the whole result of the recognition process.
